Peugeot was seeking a distinctive lasting look of its own and it was no accident that it opted for Pininfarina, a design house with an established international reputation for a style that combined classicism, inventiveness and personality.
Peugeot and Pininfarina had established a partnership that is highly unusual in the automotive world.
There is a resemblance to the 504 Coupé, another coupé created by Pininfarina for Peugeot.
This marks a turningpoint in the Peugeot Pininfarina partnership, because, for the first time, in addition to styling and design, the French company has entrusted Pininfarina with responsability for manufacturing the complete vehicle, including, assembly of the mechanical parts, and testing.
406 Coupé The production The manufacturing process of the Peugeot 406 Coupé includes assembly,body-in white finishing and painting processes, which are performed in the Grugliasco plants; trimming and assembly of the mechanical parts with subsequent testing of 100%of production on Pininfarina's own test track (and on the road) at its San Giorgio Canaveseplant.
Pininfarina produced the bodies which were them sent to Peugeot where the mechanical parts were assembled.
And in fact the 406 Coupé only shares with the 406 Saloon the floorpan, mechanical and the range-tooping engine.
These and other details are a visual impression that hark back to Peugeot coupés of the past, and foster a natural sense of brand identity.
